  1. Where do we go when we die? Jae Rhim Lee Answers

    February 15, 2012 by Newman

Where do we go when we die? It’s a simple and profoundly human question.  Simple enough for a child to ask.  Profound enough to drive humanity as a whole to every corner of our civilization  and back again.

Hehe – It never stuck me as important.  “Not my chair, not my problem” as Dan Deacon says.  I’m not around to care – after I die. And, no one really knows, cause no one comes back.[I believe in Jesus – that’s another post]

No one comes back… yet we treat dead bodies LIKE they do.  Mummies meant to last eternity in metal and plastic boxes and filled with chemicals.  The most natural of human functions (next to taxes!) couldn’t be farther from being NATURAL.

So, it’s a problem, yeah? It is. And, Jae has a solution.

    Mushrooms.

I imagine the Infinity Mushroom as a symbol of a new way of thinking about death and the relationship between my body and the environment. (Jae Rhim Lee)

  2. WordPress Theme Designers Love Mushrooms

    January 28, 2012 by Newman

Nudge Design – Web Design and Development

    Who loves Mushrooms? Everybody.

Case in point, Web Designers.  These happy people understand beauty. Form and Function are the tools of their trade.  They work very hard with little recognition – just like mushrooms!

I happen to think the Theme of this site: Liquorice by Sonia at Nudge Designs – is one of the best wordpress themes around. Certainly the best FREE WordPress theme that I’ve ever seen.  The colors are pleasing. The text is readable and classy. And the graphics are understated and beautiful.

Does the background on the header of this blog  look like a spore print to you?  It does to me.  Beauty inspired by nature – the natural mushroom way.

    Mushroom Website Inspiration

Looking for a new theme the other day, I went to Nudge Design’s website.  Imagine my surprise when I saw a little group of mushrooms sprouting up from the footer. Check it out!

Our theme designer loves mushrooms too!

Well, I had to write. It turns out that Sonia loves mushrooms.  Here’s a direct quote: “Yes, I do love mushrooms”.  You have to love the internet – we are all connected.  Perhaps we can talk with Sonia more about her design inspiration and her excellent success with WordPress Themes.  The Liquorice theme has been downloaded more than… 120, ooo TIMES!  That’s wonderful.

Good for you Sonia and thanks for being Awesome!

  3. Mushroom Soup: Where it all begins

    January 10, 2012 by admin

If you are like me, you love your grandma.  Grandmas rule.  Grandmas make your favorite meal – all the time.  Mac-n-Cheese? Yep.  Lucky Charms? Yep. Chicken Pastry?(…It’s a Southern Chicken Noodle soup) Yep.

For me, My favorite was Mushroom Soup.  Not the fancy kind… Campells Mushroom soup.

I Loved It.  And she made it tirelessly.  Special for me.

So here’s to you Grandma Eva Mae!  Thanks for all the cans of soup.  But, now that you are gone to heaven, I’m all on my own to cook myself healthy, delicious Mushroom soup.

Today, I’ll look for mushroom soup recipes and share them with you.

    Let’s start with

Eva Mae’s Cream of Mushroom Soup:

    • One can of Campbells
    • One can of milk

Place ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.  Stir to mix. Serve hot with saltine crackers.

moving right over to OTHER SIDE of the continuum. Peg the Foodie meter at Thomas Keller.  here is the mushroom soup prepared by  Sasha’s Kitchen in Brooklyn

Thomas Keller’s Mushroom Soup from Ad Hoc at Home

    • Canola oil
    • 1 cup diced carrots
    • 1 cup diced leeks
    • 1 cup diced onion
    • kosher salt
    • 1 1.2 tsp minced garlic
    • 1 small bunch of tuscan kale (cavolo nero)
    • 1 1/4 pounds (2 or 3 large) yukon gold potatoes
    • 1 sachet (1 bay leaf, three sprigs of thyme, 10 black peppercorns and 1 clove garlic)
    • 2/3 lb hen of the woods or oyster mushrooms
    • 1 1/2 T butter
    • 1/4 cups minced shallots
    • 1 T fresh thyme
    • 8 cups homemade mushroom stock (Check out the Sasha’s Kitchen Link and this Video)
    • freshly ground black pepper
    • 5 to 6 T garlic puree (I used five)
    • 1 to 2 T red wine vinegar (I used one)
    • extra virgin olive oil

For the everyday cooks out there – we stop by Allrecipes.com for Cream of Mushroom Soup

    Ingredients

    • 5 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
    • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
    • 1/2 cup chopped onion
    • 1/8 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 3 tablespoons butter
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
    • 1 cup half-and-half
    • 1 tablespoon sherry

Check out the link for the instructions – It’s not that hard and they say it’s ready in 50 minutes.  It basically says to cook the mushrooms in the broth, then puree it (Could you use a hand mixer?), then add then, in another pan, whisk the melted butter and flour.  Once that’s a good consistency add the other ingredients and the puree.

I think this might be the one I cook – Looks good and easy!

  4. Healthy Mushrooms Spring to Life

    January 4, 2012 by Newman

This Blog is dedicated to mushrooms.  Yep, the little guys.  The decomposers of the forest.  The stuff that makes drinks so much fun. Bread rise and salads have character.

Mushrooms are misunderstood.  There’s so much to be said about these wonderful denizens of the 5th kingdom.  They are inspirational.  They taste good. They are good for you. And they are good for the planet.

I notice mushrooms.  I like to take pictures of them.  I like to try new recipes with ones from the supermarket or the farmer’s market.  and when I come across them on the internet, I bookmark them … and they sit there.

Lonely, mushroom website bookmarks waiting, hiding in my bookmark file.

What are they doing there?  Are they forming a mycelium mat?  Are they ready to break out into the World Wide Web and display their wonderful fruit bodies?

Yes, its happening right now.  It’s like the rain came last night and the mushrooms carpeting this little part of the internet – HealthyMushrooms.com.

So think of me as a mushroom farmer of the internet world.  Collecting spores and making spawn. And, cultivating a garden of mushroom information right here for your delight and benefit.

Pick and share as much as you like!
